The October newsletter features some of the twenty-first Hush City Soundwalks, which took place worldwide in September to celebrate Sound Walk Sunday 2019 and crowdsource quiet areas by using Hush City app.

In doing so, we would like to acknowledge the commitment of the Hush City Soundwalk leaders, thank them and the participants and share with you snapshots of these fabulous soundwalks!

In the past days, we asked the Hush City Soundwalk leaders whether they were willing to share their impressions of the Hush City Soundwalks, and here there are their snapshots from the soundwalks led in Paranapiacaba, Reading, Arnhem, Granada and São Paulo.

The Global Program of Hush City Soundwalks 4 Soundwalk Sunday 2019 was kicked off on September 1st, with the first Hush City Soundwalk guided in Paranapiacaba (Brasil) by Ana Villas Boas, with Elaine Moraes de Albuquerque.
As reported by Ana: “The Village of Paranapiacaba is an urban nucleus planned by the English in the second half of the 19th century. […] The name “Paranapiacaba” is originated from the term of the Tupi indigenous language, which means “place where the sea can be seen” […]. Thus, the initial idea […] is to map quiet areas in the village of Paranapiacaba from the soundscape approach perceived by its inhabitants for possible unfolding of the meanings of this place, beyond the visual paradigm of the landscape. […]”. Ana with Elaine conducted another Hush City Soundwalk 4 Sound Walk Sunday 2019 on September 17th.

On September, 5th Richard Bentley led a Hush City Soundwalk in Reading (UK).
According to Richard, the Hush City soundwalk was “a wander between the quiet areas of Reading in the UK. The route highlighted the contrasting soundscapes of busy thoroughfares, quiet backstreets, public gardens and historic ruins. The sight of participants meandering slowly through the town in the fading summer sunlight, created a visual silence that passersby seemed to acknowledge and respect quite intuitively.”

On September, 13th Sharon Stewart of mixesfromthefield guided a Hush City Soundwalk in Arnhem(Netherlands).
In the words of Sharon, “there are not so many spots in Arnhem that are specifically designed as public sites. The whole city is designed to get you sitting at a table of a restaurant, indoors or outdoors.” “[The soundwalkers] went to the sites in Arnhem that are most explicitly created by the municipality as sites for sitting and rest, public sites. These were the most accessible in [their] limited time – according to Sharon – but [they] were a bit dismayed by how much noise there was from the loading and unloading of trucks, construction work […]and these ridiculous mopeds at top speeds…”
Nevertheless, some beautiful quiet spots were spotted and crowdsourced in Arnhem using the Hush City app!

On September, 23rd Jerònimo Vida Manzano of the University of Granada, guided a soundwalk in the historical center of Granada (Spain).
According to Jerònimo, “the best of the soundwalk was the soundwalk itself as we enjoyed it a lot and it was a wonderful experience. Granada was shinning that day, nice weather and a lot of people around city centre giving as a result a vivid environment but, at the same time, pleasant environment at most sites. That morning we enjoyed the best (mostly human and natural) sounds around city centre.”.

Last, but not least, on September, 28th Marcos Holtz and his team of ProAcustica Association led a Hush City Soundwalk in São Paulo (Brasil).
For them, “the best part was to realize the importance of this theme for the population in general. In a cloudy day, we gather more than 60 persons from such different areas like engineer, architects, artists, teachers, students and common citizens. It was really amazing!”.

Der Oktober-Newsletter enthält als Besonderheit Berichte von den einundzwanzigsten Hush City Soundwalks. Diese fanden im September weltweit statt, um den Sound Walk Sunday 2019 zu feiern und ruhige Orten mit hilfe der Hush City App zu einer Öffentlichkeit kartieren.

Das globale Programm 2019 von Hush City Soundwalks 4 Sound Walk Sunday 2019 am 1. September, war der erste Hush City Soundwalk in Paranapiacaba (Brasilien) von Ana Villas Boas unter der Leitung von Elaine Moraes de Albuquerque.
Ana berichtet: „Das Dorf Paranapiacaba besitzteinen städtischen Kern, der von den Engländern in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts geplant wurde. […] Der Name „Paranapiacaba“ stammt aus der indigenen Sprache der Tupi, und bedeutet „Ort, an dem das Meer zu sehen ist“ […]. Die anfängliche Idee […] ist es daher, ruhige Gebiete im Dorf Paranapiacaba anhand des von seinen Bewohnern wahrgenommenen Soundscape-Ansatzes abzubilden, um die Bedeutungen dieses Ortes über das visuelle Paradigma der Landschaft hinaus zu entfalten. […] ”. Ana und Elaine führten am 17. September 2019 einen weiteren Hush City Soundwalk 4 Sound Walk durch.

Am 5. September leitete Richard Bentley einen Hush City Soundwalk in Reading (UK).
Laut Richard war der Hush City Soundwalk „eine Wanderung zwischen den ruhigen Orten von Reading in Großbritannien. Die Route hob die kontrastierenden Klanglandschaften der geschäftigen Durchgangsstraßen, ruhigen Seitenstraßen, öffentlichen Gärten und historischen Ruinen hervor. Der Anblick der Teilnehmer, die sich im verblassenden Sommersonnenlicht langsam durch die Stadt schlängelten, erzeugte eine visuelle Stille, die die Passanten intuitiv zu erkennen und zu respektieren schienen. “

Am 13. September führte Sharon Stewart von mixesfromthefield einen Hush City Soundwalk in Arnhem(Niederlande).
Mit den Worten von Sharon: „Es gibt nicht so viele Orte in Arnheim, die speziell als öffentliche Orte konzipiert wurden. Die ganze Stadt ist so angelegt, dass Sie drinnen oder draußen an einem Tisch in einem Restaurant sitzen.“ „ [Die Soundwalker] gingen zu den Orten in Arnhem, die von der Gemeinde ausdrücklich als Orte zum Sitzen und Ausruhen, als öffentliche Orte, geschaffen wurden. Laut Sharon waren diese in der begrenzten Zeit [der Soundwalker oder der Besucher [ am leichtesten zugänglich, aber waren ein wenig bestürzt darüber, wie viel Lärm vomBe- und Entladen von Lastwagen, von Bauarbeiten […] und von diesen lächerlichen Mopeds bei Höchstgeschwindigkeit, zu hören war … “
Trotzdem wurden in Arnheim mit der Hush City App einige schöne ruhige Flecken entdeckt undbekannt gemacht, einer Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt siehe oben.

Am 23. September leitete Jerònimo Vida Manzano von der Universität Granada einen Soundwalk im historischen Zentrum von Granada (Spanien).
Jerònimo sagte: „Das Beste am Soundwalk war der Soundwalk selbst, da es uns sehr gut gefallen hat und es eine wundervolle Erfahrung war. An diesem Tag war in Granada, schönes Wetter und viele Menschen in der Nähe des Stadtzentrums, was zu einer lebendigen und jedoch gleichzeitig angenehmen Umgebung an den meisten Standorten führte. An diesem Morgen haben wir die besten (meist menschlichen und natürlichen) Klänge in der Innenstadt genossen. “
Möchten Sie in  Ihrer Fantasie nach Granada reisen? Werfen Sie einen Blick auf die Plaza de La Romanilla, die ruhigste Gegend, die Jerònimo am besten gefallen hat (trotz der Bauarbeiten!) und lassen Sie ihre Ohren nach Spanien reisen if you want to translate ear too, i think ist important: EQA # 3038 des Hush City Map.

Zu guter Letzt führten Marcos Holtz und sein Team von ProAcustica Association am 28. September einen Hush City Soundwalk in São Paulo (Brasilien) durch.
Für sie „war es das Beste, die Bedeutung dieses Themas für die Bevölkerung im Allgemeinen zu erkennen. An einem bewölkten Tag versammelten wir mehr als 60 Personen aus so unterschiedlichen Bevölkerungsgruppen  wie Ingenieure, Architekten, Künstler, Lehrer, Schüler und Bürger. Es war wirklich unglaublich! ”.
